Flock & Friends Advent Calendar day 14 - Scrap Bag by Anabelle Chan

Flock & Friends Advent Calendar day 14 - Scrap Bag by Anabelle Chan

Day 14 of the Flock & Friends Advent Calendar! 🎄✨

Today’s inspiration is a wonderfully fun and versatile make: The Scrap Bag by Anabelle Chan. A free pattern available in three practical sizes:

  • Small: approx. 9 × 10 cm
  • Medium: approx. 13 × 15 cm
  • Large: approx. 18 × 21 cm

This sweet little bag is worked seamlessly from the bottom up, in the round. Once the body is complete, the stitches are divided into two sections to create a neat folded hem on each side. From there, simple crochet drawstrings (or i-cord for larger sizes) are added and threaded through the hems to form a tidy, functional closure.

One of the best things about this pattern?
It’s highly customizable. You can cast on more or fewer stitches, make the bag taller or wider, play with stripes, gradients, colourblocks… anything goes, as long as the drawstring mechanism still works. A perfect scrap-busting project, but also a lovely canvas for intentional colour play. ✨

🧶 Yarn Recommendation

Although it’s meant for leftovers, this pattern immediately sparked inspiration for something special. I pictured it in Devon Naturals by John Arbon Textiles, a yarn full of natural charm and gentle rustic warmth.

Here’s the colour journey I imagined:

Zadie(1): 100% Zwartbles
Zoe(2): 60% Zwartbles / 40% Exmoor Blueface
Zebedee(3): 30% Zwartbles / 70% Exmoor Blueface
Ethel(4): 10% Zwartbles / 90% Exmoor Blueface
Edna(5): 100% Exmoor Blueface

A gradient moving from dark Zadie to light Edna would look stunning, softly shifting natural tones showcasing the beauty of undyed wool.
Or, for something bold: a deep Zadie top and a pale Edna body, creating a striking two-tone contrast.

A checkered two-colour version would also look incredibly charming (and very on-trend!).

This is a project you can truly make your own, whether you choose scraps or a thoughtfully curated palette. 🌿🧶
