From Beginner to First Project: A Knitting Guide

Starting a new hobby can feel intimidating, especially without guidance. When I was a child, my grandma tried to teach me how to knit. But her hands moved so quickly on the needles that there was no way I could keep up.

Ten years later, I gave it another try with a kit I bought online. Once again, it didn’t work out—I couldn’t make sense of the drawings or understand the instructions.

Another ten years passed, and this time it finally clicked. I borrowed a few helpful books from the library, watched countless YouTube tutorials at half speed (replaying them 10–20 times), and little by little, I began to understand the basics of knitting. That was my real beginning—though only the start of the journey.

This series of articles is designed to guide you step by step through the challenges you might face as a beginner. I’ll share videos, articles, products, and patterns to help you complete your very first project. And if anything is still unclear, feel free to leave a comment or email me at emilie@flockandfriends.com, I’ll be happy to help!
