Flock & Friends Advent Calendar day 11 - Wood Block Mitts by Ysolda Teague

Day 11 of the Flock & Friends Advent Calendar! 🎄✨

Today’s pattern is one I fell in love with the moment John Arbon Textiles shared it: the Wood Block Mitts by Ysolda Teague. Colourful, clever, and full of personality, these mitts are guaranteed to brighten the winter months!

These cosy fingerless mitts feature a seamless modular construction, making them both fun to knit and wonderfully comfortable to wear. The playful geometric shapes hint at block printing and quilting, making this a delightful choice for anyone who loves graphic patterns and a fun construction challenge.

Each mitt begins with a central star motif. You first knit a mitred square, then pick up stitches to work a series of small triangles and squares. Once the block is complete, it’s folded in half and additional triangles are used to close the shape, leaving an opening for the thumb.

Since each small section is worked individually, you’re only ever knitting one colour at a time, making this a relaxed yet engaging project. The modular design also makes the pattern perfect for scrap yarn, mini skeins, or playful colour experiments.

The mitts are worked in fingering/4ply weight yarn, and the original sample uses Exmoor Sock by John Arbon Textiles in the following shades:

🧶 Fairy Thimble(1)
🧶 Drumble(2)
🧶 Mackerel-Sky(3)
🧶 Quick Beam(4)

Of course, the colour possibilities are endless. Go subtle, go bold, mix scraps, or build your own palette!

A wonderful, cheerful project that’s as fun to knit as it is to wear.
