Flock & Friends Advent Calendar day 4 - Good Mouse by Susan B. Anderson
Welcome to Day 4 of the Flock & Friends Advent Calendar! 🎄✨
Today I’m sharing a pattern I’ve already knitted, and absolutely adore! The Good Mouse by Susan B. Anderson. My daughter loves it, so this one comes with heartfelt approval! 🐭💛
The Good Mouse is the fourth character in the charming “Good” series of handknit toys, joining Good Bear, Good Bunny, and Good Frog. The pattern is wonderfully detailed and includes not only the mouse itself, but also an entire little wardrobe: overalls with pockets, a stripey sweater, a buttoned jacket, and a folded-brim hat. It truly feels like knitting a tiny storybook character.
The mouse is worked seamlessly in the round from the bottom up, starting with the legs, then joining them to shape the body and head. Clever construction details make the process surprisingly intuitive: purl bumps mark where to pick up the arms later, and there are guides to place the eyes (a detail I always appreciate, as I never know exactly where they should go!). The ears, arms, and tail are picked up and knit on, and thanks to the shaping, the little nose naturally tilts upward, giving the mouse an extra spark of personality and wonder.
At only about 20 cm tall, it knits up quickly… and it’s very addictive. Full of charm and perfect for play, storytelling, or gifting, Good Mouse is one of those patterns you can easily knit more than once.

If I were to make it again, I’d use Yarnadelic Sport (the recommended weight), and here’s the colour combination I’d pick:
🧶 Ordinary Joe (2) — for the mouse
🧶 Canto de Ossanha (1) — for the hat bobble and the stripey sweater
🧶 Sunflower in My Garden (3) — for the hat and cardigan
🧶 Women in Blue (4) — for the ribbing on the hat, cardigan and stripey sweater
🧶 Badi Da (5) — for the overalls
It's also a fantastic stash-busting project, so however you style your mouse, it’s bound to be a win-win! ✨
